What are some reasons Nic turns to drugs? What are his insecurities? How do drugs help him escape them?

I just finished Beautiful Boy and read Tweak earlier this year. The viewpoint from the father's perspective is more fresh in my mind. I think that it would have been difficult for him to deal with his mom and dad living in two different locations. I also think that it would have been difficult to live with his dad and a new wife when they  had additional shared children/siblings, where he possibly never felt completely a part of the family in the same way. I think he may have been exposed to some situations when he was younger when his father was dating (think I remember that from the book Tweak). I also watched a segment online that said he was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder so probably some or a good portion was self-medicating for a mental health condition that was not diagnosed.

I also remember at one point Nic candidly saying that he wanted to be like the authors and musicians he idolized. Many of them dipped in and out of drug culture with little consequence. Others died from drug overdose; however, he did not necessarily see the depths they fell to. He only saw what everyone else saw, a famous person using substances, and sometimes even drawing more creativity from doing so, which is what Nic said that he wanted to experience.
